Requesting a student group workshop provides tailored training to enhance your group’s effectiveness, engagement, and teamwork. These workshops offer practical strategies and skills, empowering members of your student group to achieve their full potential and drive group success.
The available EmpowerED Student Group Training Workshops include:
Unlock the potential of your student organization’s core members with our “Empowering the Core” workshop. This session focuses on effective strategies to engage, inspire, and retain mid-level members, ensuring they remain motivated and committed. Learn how to create a supportive environment, recognize contributions, and foster a sense of ownership that drives your group’s success. Empower your central team to thrive and lead with enthusiasm.
Ensure your student organization operates smoothly and effectively with our “Foundations, Principles & Practices Using Your Student Group Constitution” workshop. This session will help you understand the core elements of your constitution, guiding principles, and the best practices for implementing its provisions. Learn how to leverage your group’s constitution to navigate challenges, maintain order, and uphold your organization’s mission and values. Set a solid foundation for governance and success.
Ensure a smooth and effective leadership changeover with our “Leadership Handoff” workshop. This session provides comprehensive strategies for planning and executing officer transitions, emphasizing continuity, knowledge transfer, and sustained organizational success. Equip your outgoing and incoming officers with the tools they need for a seamless transition, ensuring your student group remains strong and vibrant.
This training is mandatory for student groups organizing events or programs that involve alcohol. Prior to approval of their event/program, student groups must successfully complete this training. The training will cover the university’s alcohol policy and procedures while outlining the responsibilities of the designated contact person who will be responsible for the event. It aims to ensure that student groups are aware of and comply with the university’s guidelines concerning alcohol and event planning.
This training is designed to equip student groups with the skills and techniques necessary to navigate and handle conflicts within their student group. Participants will learn strategies for effective communication, active listening, and mediation to resolve conflicts in a constructive and collaborative manner. During the training, attendees will explore various conflict scenarios commonly encountered by student groups, such as disagreements over leadership, decision-making, or conflicting goals. Facilitators will provide practical tools and resources to help participants assess and understand the underlying causes of conflict.
This workshop will provide student groups with valuable information and guidance on planning a successful trip for an upcoming event or program. During the workshop, you will learn the necessary policies and procedures, as well as how to access funding to cover the expenses associated with the trip. This workshop is designed to equip you with the knowledge and resources needed to plan an effective and well-organized trip.

STUDENT GROUP LEADER TRAINING (SGLT)
The Student Group Leader Training (SGLT) is a required day of training for all student groups recognized Student Union and the Office of Campus Life. This training provides a comprehensive overview of essential topics student leaders need to understand to operate effectively on the Danforth Campus.
Each fall, student groups must complete two components:
In-Person Training Session
Following the online module, at least one (1) officer must attend the in-person SGLT session, usually held on a Saturday in late August or early September.
Online Pre-Training (Canvas)
At least one (1) officer from each student group must complete the required online pre-training module in Canvas prior to the in-person session.
Student groups that complete both components will be permitted to begin programming and hosting events. Groups that do not fulfill these requirements will be restricted from programming until a makeup session is completed.
The 2026 – 2027 Academic Year SGLT dates and details will be announced in late spring or early summer 2026.
